Golfweek chokes with cover
Just when we thought the furor had died down over Golf Channel anchor Kelly Tilghman's on-air comment that players should "lynch (Tiger Woods) in a back alley" comes the latest edition of Golfweek magazine — with a picture of a noose on the cover.
By all accounts, those in the business who know Tilghman think she's a good person who unfortunately said something stupid on the air. She immediately apologized and then sought out Woods' representatives. The golfer's agent has said he believes the comment to be a "non-issue." Tilghman was suspended for two weeks by her network.
Golfweek editor Dave Seanor told USA Today the magazine chose to use the "arresting" image because "we thought would draw attention to an issue we thought deserved some intelligent dialogue."
Not everyone is enamored with the concept. PGA commissioner Tim Finchem had this reaction to the Golfweek cover:
"Clearly, what Kelly said was inappropriate and unfortunate and she obviously regrets her choice of words. But we consider Golfweek's imagery of a swinging noose on its cover to be outrageous and irresponsible. It smacks of tabloid journalism. It was a naked attempt to inflame and keep alive an incident that was heading to an appropriate conclusion."
The Spud believes Golfweek should have heeded the words of noted sociologist Harry Edwards, who is quoted in the magazine's piece.
"If we stopped the train every time somebody made a dumb remark that is potentially offensive," Edwards said, "we'd never progress as a society."

let me know when you actually get to the intelligent dialogue...
