Hall of Famer Bob Prince may be the best known voice in Pittsburgh Pirates history, but no one spent more years in the broadcast booth calling Bucs games than Lanny Frattare.
The 60-year-old Frattare, a Pirate announcer for 33 seasons, called it quits Wednesday. He was under contract for 2009 but decided now was the time to retire.
Frattare, was an announcer for the Pirates' Charleston Charlies Triple-A farm club when he was hired by the parent club following the surprise 1975 dismissals of Prince and Nellie King. In his 33 years with the Pirates, the team had 22 losing seasons.
The Pirates said Frattare will be honored in an on-field ceremony next year.
