Why would any self-respecting media organization run the risk of duping its readers by running a bogus April Fool's story?
Car and Driver magazine's headline Wednesday that President Barack Obama had ordered Chevrolet and Dodge to withdraw NASCAR funding by the end of the season if parents General Motors and Chrysler were to receive further federal assistance was regrettable given the tenuous position the automakers are in, not to mention its potential damage to the racing body.
The faux story appeared just days after Obama stared down the auto companies by issuing an ultimatum calling for drastic restructuring. GM CEO Rick Wagoner was forced out in the process.
Though the article was labeled as a put-on, the magazine apologized for having "gone too far" and later pulled it from its Web site.
With GM facing bankruptcy and Chrysler possible extinction, the futures of many workers, dealers, suppliers and anyone else connected to the industry hang in the balance.
Given the uneasiness of the times and how quickly even the most banal items can make the rounds, Car and Driver hit the wall with this ill-timed prank.
